The Power of a "Chuck-It" List: Letting Go to Move Forward

I was inspired to create a “chuck-it list” after attending a thought-provoking presentation last week. We’ve all heard of bucket lists—those aspirations we carry, dreams we want to accomplish, and milestones we aim to reach. Bucket lists inspire us to set goals, push limits, and explore the world. While we eagerly plan what to add to our lives, how often do we stop to think about what we need to remove? Enter the "chuck-it list."

A chuck-it list is the opposite of a bucket list. Instead of focusing on things to achieve or attain, it’s about letting go of what holds us back. Often, we are so focused on achieving success that we overlook the habits, beliefs, or fears weighing us down. These obstacles can prevent us from realizing our potential. By identifying and removing them, we free up the energy and focus needed to move closer to our goals—whether in business, personal development, or life in general.

What’s on your chuck-it list? It could be something as concrete as an outdated process in your business, or something more internal, like a fear of failure or self-doubt. It might even be certain relationships that drain your energy rather than nurture your growth. As we chase success, we tend to hold onto familiar, comfortable things—sometimes even when they no longer serve us. Letting go of what doesn't fit is essential for making room for what does.

One powerful question to ask yourself is: What do I need to let go of to move toward the accomplishment of my goal? Whether you're aiming for a business milestone, a personal achievement, or simply a more balanced life, identifying the roadblocks in your path is key. Maybe you need to chuck the belief that you have to do everything yourself. Delegating and outsourcing might be the breakthrough that allows your business to scale. Or perhaps it’s about letting go of the idea that perfection is a must, which is paralyzing your progress.

The beauty of the chuck-it list is its simplicity. Letting go of just one thing can create a profound shift, opening the door to new opportunities and allowing you to move forward with clarity. So, what’s the one thing you still need to chuck? Your answer may just be the catalyst that propels you toward your next big win. Email me at mcorrado@aseonline.org.
